Study Information

Find COVID is a study by UCSF researchers working to understand when and for how long people with COVID-19 remain infectious. This will help determine how long people should quarantine after they receive a positive test result, develop symptoms, or have been around someone who tests positive for COVID-19. Importantly, we want to learn more about when people can safely return to work or their public life.

Our study will also answer critical questions about SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, and its transmission. For example, our team is working to better understand:

  • Where and for how long the virus lives in different parts of the body, including the mouth, throat, and eyes.

  • When and for how long COVID-19 can be transmitted to family and household members. Household members include the people who live in your apartment or house.

  • When the household members and contacts of people with COVID-19 should be tested.

  • How long people are unknowingly able to transmit COVID-19 before they develop symptoms.

Study Compensation

You will be paid $40 for completing the initial visit and $40 after 28 days upon completing the follow-up visits.

What to Expect

If you are interested in participating in the study, we will first talk with you over the phone to better understand if you and your household are eligible for the study and to answer all of your questions.

If you are eligible and you and at least one member of your household would like to participate, we will visit you at your home once a week for 4 weeks. At each of these 4 visits, we will collect blood from those in the household who are participating in the study. Between these visits, we will ask you to collect swabs and samples from different parts of your body (e.g., collecting saliva and swabbing your nose). If you prefer not to collect certain samples, you can still participate.

Each week, we will also call you by phone to complete a questionnaire to learn more about you, your symptoms, and your experience with COVID-19.
